Music news: “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” press conference June 28, 2008

(I should just keep my camera with me at all times, right? Because if you’ve ever looked at this site before, you know my phone doesn’t cut it)

This goes down as one of my best journalism experiences so far. Earlier this week my editor gave me a hilarious/awesome assignment: Cover Aerosmith’s press conference about their Guitar Hero game that comes out on Sunday.

The other Billboard intern and I went to Hard Rock Café in Times Square for the conference, which was supposed to start at 4 p.m. (but didn’t actually start till 4:15). I wrote some of the story before we left (details about the game, etc.) and pretty much just needed to add in the quotes, but I took my computer with me, typed what the band members said, then pulled quotes from there and had the story in to my editor before 5:30 p.m.

I’m not a huge Aerosmith fan (but do love some of their songs), but it was still pretty sweet to actually see them in person. The only thing was, it was supposed to be a press conference, yet when given the opportunity to ask a question, a couple of obnoxious fans instead told the band all their personal stories about why they love them. One of the guys who did this prefaced his speech with “I’m from CNN.” Journalism, what?

Anyway, my story is online here.

New music story: Tyga June 28, 2008

I have a story in this week’s issue of Billboard about 18-year-old rapper Tyga, whose album debuted at No. 1 on the Top Heatseekers chart, but I am super excited because I just found out it got picked up by Reuters and Yahoo!! Billboard has a deal with Reuters (news wire service) where it can pick up our stories, but it’s never happened with any of mine so this is big news!

Check out the story here. It is cut down a little bit from the print version, but no big deal.

Live review/news: Modest Mouse @ Music Hall of Williamsburg June 21, 2008

(From my phone, of course. This time I actually meant to bring my camera and totally forgot.)

Ahhh, sleep! I finally got some. Yesterday morning I went to see Modest Mouse at Music Hall of Williamsburg, which was awesome, even if it wasn’t the best set list.

I got there at about 12:30 a.m. (doors were supposedly at 1 a.m.), but the box office was still waiting on the band’s guest list. So I waited around for a while and watched as the line to get in wrapped all the way to the end of the block and around the corner. The list didn’t get there until the venue already started letting people in, and once I got my ticket I still had to go allll the way to the end of the line (even though I was waiting longer than a lot of the people there). It took forever and a half to get in and it didn’t even look like everyone was going to fit in the venue, but alas, once I finally got inside, it didn’t even seem that crowded and I was able to get about four people from the front without even having to push.

The show was supposed to start at 1:30 a.m. but I didn’t even get in the venue until after that, and it took forever to set everything up, so they didn’t come onstage till about 2:30 a.m. There really was no room to move on that stage with six people and a bazillion instruments. It was way more crowded than when I saw Beirut there last month, and they have about 10 people in the band.

Last time I saw Modest Mouse was at Lollapalooza last year, and it was not so great. Obviously the festival setting usually takes away from the band’s performance but I just remember it being pretty boring. Before that, I saw them about four years ago at the Royal Oak Music Theater in Royal Oak, Mich., for the “Good News For People Who Love Bad News” tour, which was amazing, since it’s a small-ish standing-room-only venue (1500-2000ish capacity) and I was pretty close to the stage.

They played until 4 a.m., when the venue said they were out of time, which meant no encore. Also, I thought the last two songs were the worst (not because I hate the songs but one was too slow for staying awake at almost 4 a.m., and the other didn’t really wake me up either), so I was pretty bummed about the ending.

I went home and started writing, saw it get light outside around 5 a.m., slept from 5:15-7:15 a.m., then got up to write some more and go to work because my story was due at 11 a.m. Ohhh, journalism.

Anyway, my story (not really a review, it ran in the news section) for Billboard is here.

Modest Mouse’s setlist:

“Trucker’s Atlas”
“Breakthrough”
“Fire It Up”
“Dance Hall”
“Dashboard”
“Dramamine”
“Satin in a Coffin”
“Wild Packs of Family Dogs”
“Tiny Cities Made of Ashes”
“Little Motel”
“Paper Thin Walls”
“We’ve Got Everything”
“Blame It On The Tetons”
“The Good Times Are Killing Me”

New music feature: Tilly and the Wall June 20, 2008

I saw Tilly and the Wall live for the first time in September 2005, about three weeks into my freshman year in college. They played at Mac’s Bar in Lansing with David Dondero, Neva Dinova, and Orenda Fink (of Azure Ray). It definitely was one of my favorite shows of all time. As much as they get played off as a novelty band because they have a tap dancer instead of a drummer, I still think they’re great and was so excited to interview Jamie Pressnall (the tap dancer) about their new album, which came out on Tuesday (June 17).

The show was announced this morning and sold out in about 10 minutes (maybe not even?). More tomorrow.

Live review (not really): Adele @ Billboard Café June 17, 2008

One of the cool things about my internship is that we have random artists come in at least once a week to perform a couple of songs in our cafeteria (Billboard Café). They get filmed and then posted on the Web site with an interview and what not. Usually it’s pretty random people who come in, but we’ve had some interesting ones (interpret that how however you’d like), like Delta Goodrem (Australia’s top-selling female artist, who is super talented), Brianna Taylor from the current season of The Real World, and the new Menudo (there was an MTV show to form a new version of Latino boy band Menudo).

However, yesterday’s performance is the first one I was really excited about seeing, which was Adele, whose album 19 just came out in the U.S. last week. She’s 20 years old, British, has a phenomenal voice, and seems to be totally blowing up. She performed two songs, “Right As Rain” and “Chasing Pavements” and even though the performance was at 11:30 a.m. and she said she was worn out, she sounded awesome.

For some reason I can’t figure out how to get video in here, but the Billboard video of “Right As Rain” is here and “Chasing Pavements” + interview is here.

Live review: Death Cab For Cutie @ McCarren Park Pool June 16, 2008

(photo from my phone, of course … didn’t want to risk the camera in the storm, which turned out to be a good call!)

Last Tuesday I went to see Death Cab for Cutie at McCarren Park Pool, about a 15-minute walk from my apartment. All day I was paranoid about the storm that weather.com said was going to happen, so I came prepared with a poncho (since I thought taking notes while holding an umbrella would be tough). I got there at least a half hour after the doors opened but somehow managed to snag a spot on the barricade at the front.

The show was fantastic, even though there were a few sound/instrument problems. However, the show got cut short before the encore because the storm was finally coming and it was too dangerous to be onstage (not to mention I was kind of terrified of the lighting rigs falling on my head).

It started raining as everyone was clearing out of the pool, and when I got my poncho out I couldn’t figure out where the head hole was because clearly, I’m an idiot. I was already soaked but resorted to wearing it around me like a cape, which … didn’t help much. The whole running-through-a-storm thing was very familiar, since the same thing happened at the Decemberists show in Millennium Park in Chicago last summer. That was worse though, my friends and I were on our way to a restaurant, not home, and all looked and felt like we had been swimming in our clothes. Gross.

Anyway, read my Billboard.com review here.

Listening to: not enough new stuff June 15, 2008

Filed under: blog — lauraleebove @ 8:45 am

I’ve slacked a little this week and have been letting my CDs pile up without me listening to them, but I eventually will get through them … Also, most of the albums I’ve listened to more than once or twice in the past week have been for stories and reviews that haven’t been published (or, in some cases, written) yet, so I don’t want to write about them here until everything’s done. Bottom line, no “listening to” this week. Check out my last.fm page to get an idea of what’s been in my ears.

Coming up this week: Death Cab for Cutie show review, Tilly and the Wall feature and album review, Mason Jennings feature

Live review: The Cool Kids @ Knitting Factory June 8, 2008

(photo from my phone)

Apparently I used my camera enough during the Rilo Kiley show that it drained the batteries … pretty lame, considering they were new batteries and I only shot during three songs, but I was not happy to turn on my camera at the Cool Kids show and see the battery sign blinking. Since my camera’s not great to begin with, the photos I got were pretty horrible. If I somehow come across an extra few hundred dollars, I’m going to buy myself a better camera.

Anyway, the Cool Kids were pretty sweet. The set was short (as expected, they only have one 10-song EP and a few other random songs out), but they put on a good show.

Listening to: Martha Wainwright, The Ting Tings, Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet June 7, 2008

Seeing as I have been in New York four weeks and have already accumulated more than 50 CDs, I’m going to start writing about some of the new stuff I get.

Martha Wainwright

I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too (Zoe)
Release date June 10
About 32 years old, Canadian, sister of Rufus Wainwright. I Know You’re Married … is her second LP.
Sounds like Folky acoustic guitars with pop melodies. Her voice sometimes has the same kind of young sound as Joanna Newsom and Anaïs Mitchell, which I love.
Listen to if you like Anaïs Mitchell, Emma Pollock, Tori Amos

The Ting Tings
We Started Nothing (Columbia/Red Ink)
Release date June 3
About U.K. duo of Jules De Martino and Katie White. Best known for the song “Shut Up and Let Me Go,” which is in an iPod commercial.
Sounds like summer. Lots of chanting, cheering, and clapping, some electronics.
Listen to if you like The Brunettes, The Go! Team, Matt & Kim

Abigail Washburn and The Sparrow Quartet
Abigail Washburn and The Sparrow Quartet (Nettwerk)
Release date May 20
About Banjo player/singer Abigail Washburn played with banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, cellist Ben Sollee, and fiddler Casey Dreissen on her first solo LP, Song of the Traveling Daughter, but decided to give the group an official name on this release. Album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums chart and I wrote a story about it.
Sounds like straight-up folk music (some bluegrass, but not so much). Washburn has a gorgeous voice, the music is tight and they all are phenomenal.
Listen to if you like Nickel Creek, Béla Fleck
