Live photos: Bowerbirds @ the Pike Room (7/16/09)

A few friends and I saw Bowerbirds at the Pike Room at the Crofoot on Thursday night. It was my third time seeing them (Pitchfork on Saturday made four) and, as always, they were absolutely beautiful. They played with a crackling in the background to sound like a campfire (awww), and one of the guys from opening band Megafaun played bass. I always get really excited when I see the stand-alone bass drum because it reminds me of being in drumline in high school…so that was exciting! Megafaun was great too, as were the band members’ huge beards.

July 7 releases to check out: Bowerbirds, Discovery, Those Darlins

Since I have a bit more time on my hands I’m going to try posting some music stuff besides just when I have new stuff published…I don’t know how long it will last.

BowerbirdsUpper Air (Dead Oceans) (Bowerbirds’ MySpace)
Whenever anyone asks me what Bowerbirds sound like, my enthusiastic, gushing response is always, “Oh my god, they are soooo beeeauuutiful!!” But I suppose that doesn’t say too much, does it? They’re a folky acoustic duo from North Carolina that use an accordion, bass drum (drumline-style, but on the floor), and various other instruments, and the lyrics have lots of nature-y metaphors and imagery (In “Crooked Lust,” Phil Moore sings, “My conscience is an avalanche, majestic, bewildering and wholly careless”). Upper Air isn’t incredibly different from their self-titled debut album, but it’s just as good, which definitely is enough for me.

Listen: “Beneath Your Tree” [MP3], “Northern Lights” [MP3]

DiscoveryLP (XL Recordings) (Discovery’s MySpace)

This album was soooo not what I expected and I think that’s why I wasn’t sure if I liked it after the first listen. The band is Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend and Wes Miles from Ra Ra Riot (with guest appearances from the Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian and VW’s Ezra Koenig), so I was slightly surprised to hear a bunch of R&B/electro-pop by way of tons of synths. (Looking back at the press release, I should have noticed the warning of, “It’s quite different from either band, so listen to it with an open mind.” Oops.) “Osaka Loop Line” kinda reminds me of the Postal Service, and now the band’s cover of the Jackson 5′s “I Want You Back” is a bit more relevant. I’m not totally into every track, but overall it’s a great dance album.

Listen: “Orange Shirt” [MP3]

Those Darlinss/t (Oh Wow Dang) (Those Darlins’ MySpace)

I generally am not a fan of country music but, like I said a couple posts ago, these gals are awesome enough to change my mind for a little bit. Some tracks have more of a classic rock sound, but most are rooted in Americana/country. The lyrics are fun and it’s clear that they like to drink a lot—whether it’s getting drunk and eating chicken (“The Whole Damn Thing”) or getting started at half-past noon (“Glass To You”). It’s also pretty impressive that the band is releasing its debut album on its own label (read my story about that here).

Listen: “Red Light Love” [MP3]

Live photos: Bon Iver and Bowerbirds @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

OK, this post is a little late but I’m still catching up on life from the past week or so.

The Bon Iver and Bowerbirds show on July 30 was phenomenal, as expected, but I didn’t have time to write a formal review since it ended at midnight then I had to go home and pack, sleep for two hours, and leave for the airport at 5:30 a.m. You’d think that fans would feel kinda ripped off by a headliner who only plays about 10 songs, but this definitely wasn’t the case with Bon Iver … but he only has one album so far. Also, some of those songs are pretty damn long. It actually seemed more like a co-headlining set because Bowerbirds probably playd eight or so songs too (but I also thought of it as co-headlining since I love both bands).

These aren’t the greatest photos because the lighting was so insanely dark during most of the show, but I tried. One of these days I’ll get a good camera …

Have you listened to Bowerbirds?

Just when I thought I couldn’t love the Bowerbirds more, Stereogum posted about their take-away show in New York.

I was already enamored with the band after seeing them in Chicago in March, but after watching these four videos I pretty much fell in love with them all over again. Live, among the three band members they play acoustic guitar, accordion, autoharp, a bass drum, violin, and this keyboard-type thing you play with your feet to get really low bass notes (no idea what it’s called). Add to that solid, three-part harmonies and great lyrics and I could probably listen to them forever.

The videos obviously are stripped down, since they are playing in a store and a car and while walking down the street, but the music is still incredibly clear. I have to admit that part of why I love the videos (and the band) so much is that they use a bass drum like what I played in marching band in high school, and when they’re walking down the street, I can’t help but think of that. Also, I love how cautious Beth looks, and well, rightfully so because I imagine it can’t be too easy to play an accordion and walk at the same time.

If you check them out, my favorite video is the one for “In Our Talons,” and you also can listen to a bunch of their songs at myspace.com/bowerbirds.
